Stealing or unauthorized use of a person’s identity information by another for both financial and non financial benefits can lead to the conviction of identity theft .

 

Statutes of the state:

  • According to the law,
    • any individual fraudulently using an individual’s personal identification information is said to be committing a criminal offense, according to the penal code section  Minn. Stat. §609.527 (2000).
  • The penalties for identity theft according to the law in Minnesota are as follows.

·         Total loss is $250, then fine up to $700 or imprisonment or 3 months.

·         Loss more than $250 and up to $500 – fine of $3000 or jail for a year.

·         Loss of $2,500 or more – fine of $20,000, jail for 10 years, and a right for restitution.
