The Washington Consumer Act aims to protect the best interests of consumers by preventing unfair and deceptive trade practices committed by traders of goods and services.

  • RCW 19.86.020 of the Act makes it unlawful for merchants to adopt unfair methods of competition or conduct deceptive acts in commercial activities.
  • RCW 19.86.030 prevents the formation of any trusts or monopolies or price-fixing arrangements among traders, which possibly prove to be detrimental for consumer interests.
  • Through his investigation and hearings, the Attorney General convinces of the deceptive trade practices. Accordingly, he may award the affected consumers recovery of damages suffered and penalize the guilty traders.
