The Hawaii child support law prescribes the use of Melson formula for determining the custodian amount in relation to a minor child.
- The Melson formula uses the basic version of incomes shares method, in addition to which a Standard Of Living Adjustment (SOLA) will also be provided.
- The SOLA will enable the child to receive a share in the increased income of the parent.
- The formula employs a six step process which involves inclusion of emergency medical expenses, basic needs, and SOLA of the child.
- The Child support guidelines takes into account with the income of the parents in order to compute the award amount for child support.
